Retiring After 65? We’ll Help You Transition to Medicare with Confidence

If you’re over 65 and still working—or covered through your spouse’s job—you may not have needed Medicare yet. But once you retire or lose employer coverage, it’s time to take action.

At American Insurance Counselors, we make Medicare enrollment easy and help you choose the right coverage for your retirement—whether that’s a Medicare Supplement or a Medicare Advantage Plan.

Do You Need to Enroll in Medicare Now?

If your (or your spouse’s) employer has 20 or more employees and you’ve had coverage through active employment, you likely delayed Medicare enrollment. When that coverage ends, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

  • Your SEP lasts 8 months from the date your employer coverage ends.
  • During this time, you can enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B without late penalties.

We’ll Guide You Through Enrollment

You can enroll in Medicare through the Social Security Administration:

  • Visit www.ssa.gov
  • If you already have Medicare Part A, you’ll only need to sign up for Part B

Important: HSA Considerations

If you’re still contributing to a Health Savings Account (HSA), Medicare enrollment needs careful timing:

  • Once enrolled in Medicare Part A, you can no longer contribute to your HSA.
  • Part A is often backdated up to six months, which could create tax penalties if you contributed during that time.

We’ll help you time your Medicare enrollment to avoid costly surprises.

Choose the Medicare Plan That Fits Your Retirement

Once enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B, you have two main ways to receive your Medicare benefits:

Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C)

  • Combines Part A, Part B, and usually Part D (prescriptions)
  • May include dental, vision, hearing, and wellness benefits
  • Often lower monthly premiums with co-pays and provider networks

Medicare Supplement Plan (Medigap) + Part D

  • Helps cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and coinsurance
  • See any provider that accepts Medicare—no networks
  • Add a standalone Part D plan for prescription drug coverage

We represent multiple top-rated carriers and will help you compare plans side-by-side to find the best value for your needs and budget.
